With warmer weather there is usually an increase in door-to-door sales. Persons selling meat and poultry may also approach consumers door-to-door. While shopping from the home can be convenient and timesaving, the Better Business Bureau advises caution to consumers considering purchasing meat and poultry from door-to-door salespersons. According to the Food Safety Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), consumers should be sure the product has been carried in a refrigerated vehicle. Never purchase meat or poultry products that are carried in an un-refrigerated truck or car trunk as the product may be unsafe because bacteria that cause illness multiply rapidly above 40 degrees. It is important to check for grading information on the product label. Also, if the salesperson is offering "restaurant quality" meat, keep in mind that this means nothing when describing the meat. Insist on having the establishment number where the meat or poultry was inspected. Understand the cuts of meat or poultry and check the label for proper identification of the cut. The BBB suggests the following for consumers regarding door-to-door meat and poultry offers:
The Federal Trade Commission allows consumers three days to cancel purchases made in their home for sales over $25.00. The salesperson must orally inform the consumer of their cancellations rights at the time of sale. |
