Charitable Giving: Be Safe BEWARE!
Posted: 02/07/2005

Watch for excessive pressure or on-the-spot donations. Be wary of any request to send a "runner" to pick up your contribution.

Don't be fooled by names that closely resemble other well-known organizations.

Go directly to Web sites of known charities instead of following links sent in unsolicited e-mails. They could be fraudulent!

If you contribute, do not give cash. Make a check or money order out to the name of the charitable organization, never to an individual collecting the donation.

Before you give, check with the BBB Wise Giving Alliance at www.give.org or the Colorado Secretary of State www.state.sos.co.us and research the potential charity.

If you are suspicious about a charitable solicitation, contact the Secretary of State at 303-894-2200 or the Colorado Attorney General at 1-800-222-4444.
