Attorney General Warns Of E-Mail Scam Designed to Obtain Credit Card Numbers

Denver--Attorney General Ken Salazar issued a consumer alert today advising Colorado consumers to be on the lookout for a fraudulent e-mail that is being received by consumers across the country. Consumers’ responses to the e-mail might be used to gain access to consumers' credit card information or other personal financial information. "Under no circumstances should consumers respond to this e-mail," said Attorney General Salazar.

The e-mail states that Best Buy’s fraud department recently received an order using the consumer’s personal credit card information. The e-mail then goes on to state that Best Buy has some suspicions regarding the order and asks that the consumer click on a hypertext link to enter a special fraud department page where the consumer could verify or decline the order.

Best Buy is aware of the problem and has taken measures to shut down the fraudulent website. If you receive this e-mail message, do not respond. Instead, forward it immediately to the Colorado Attorney General's Office at stop.fraud@state.co.us
