(DENVER) – AARP ElderWatch and the Colorado Attorney General’s Office are pleased to announce a special event, “Fight Fraud - Shred Instead,” to be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10 AM – 2 PM at Windsor Gardens (595 South Clinton Street, Denver). This unique opportunity provides older Coloradans and their families a way to safely discard outdated or no longer needed personal and financial documents. “Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America. Each year, thousands of Colorado citizens and businesses lose millions of dollars to identity theft,” said Attorney General Suthers. “This event is an opportunity to reach out to the community and help Coloradans discard outdated personal documents.” Shred-It, an international shredding company, and Windsor Gardens have joined the effort. Shred-It will provide two trucks capable of shredding a carton of paper in mere minutes at no charge. Windsor Gardens has generously donated their facility for the event and will hold it in their office parking area. While AARP ElderWatch genuinely hopes that older consumers will take advantage of this special day, all are welcome. Please note, however, there is a two box limit per person and only paper documents will be accepted. All documents shredded that day will be recycled. “All consumers must realize the importance of safely discarding outdated documents that contain personal identifying information. Shredding these documents is a significant step towards preventing identity theft,” said Janice L. Friddle, AARP ElderWatch Director. Colorado Attorney General, John W. Suthers will provide opening remarks at 10 a.m. AARP ElderWatch volunteers will be on hand to assist with unloading boxes and transporting them to the trucks for shredding. Participants will be able to drive through, unload, and obtain an information packet including key consumer information as they depart. AARP ElderWatch is a project of the Colorado Attorney General and the AARP Foundation. Additionally, ElderWatch is a proud partner with the Colorado Consumer Line at 1-800-222-4444. |
