Warranties
Be Cautious! Be Aware!

According to the Federal Trade Commission, federal law requires that warranties be available for you to read before you buy, even when you’re shopping by catalog or on the Internet. Coverage can vary, so you should compare the extent of warranty coverage just as you can compare the style, price and other characteristics of a product.

When you are checking out a written warranty consider asking these questions before you purchase:

  • How long does the warranty last? Check the warranty to see when it begins and when it expires, as well as any conditions that may void coverage.
  • Who do you contact to get warranty service? This is an important question because some warranties for cars, are provided by an outside vender. Make sure you know who to contact- the seller, manufacturer, or some other business.
  • What will the company do if the product fails? Read to see whether the company will repair the item, replace it, or refund your money.
  • Is labor covered? This is very important with car warranties, and extended warranties, because the parts might be covered, but expensive labor might be your responsibility.

The bottom line with any warranty is to get it in writing, read the fine print and be knowledgeable about what it covers and does not cover. Hopefully you’ll never have to use the warranty, but buyers beware if do.
